Spoils of format wars sweet but fleeting

Undergraduates sometimes appear slightly confused when Timothy Simcoe refers to something called "Betamax."For years, the defunct Sony Corp. videotape technology represented the textbook case of how to lose a format war and was used widely as a cautionary tale by university professors such as Prof. Simcoe, who teaches business strategy at the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management.
