Abitibi yields to green pressure

MONTREAL -- Paper giant AbitibiBowater Inc. has bowed to pressure from environmentalists to adhere to tougher forest standards on some Crown-owned and private lands that it manages in Canada.The move announced yesterday by Abitibi could entail higher silviculture costs for the world's biggest newsprint producer, but it could also appease publishers in Europe worried that they could become the subject of boycotts by groups such as Greenpeace if they use paper made by Abitibi.
