ST. THOMAS, Ontario — Ford of Canada says its plant in St. Thomas could survive on one shift.
President Bill Osborne says strong demand for the Lincoln Town Car next year could justify the continuation of one production shift.
Ford cut one shift, or about 50 per cent of output in St. Thomas, this summer because of falling demand for the Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis cars.
It has increased concerns that parent Ford Motor Co. eventually will close the 40-year-old plant.
Auto makers generally close one-shift operations before a two-shift plant because they are less efficient.
But Mr. Osborne says the Town Car's performance in the marketplace could keep the plant profitable even on one shift.
