IBM buys Cognos for $4.9-billion
In taking a run at Ottawa-based Cognos Inc., IBM Corp. is targeting one of the few remaining players in the rapidly growing, high-margin sector of business intelligence software.
The $4.9-billion (U.S.) offer would see the Armonk, N.Y., tech giant acquire the biggest remaining player in the specialized field, which allows companies to mine the burgeoning amounts of data they collect to help hone their strategies in the marketplace.
