Vern McPherson from writes:
Mr Morgan fibeth. Why ? Because he is a COns.
There was nowhere close to 500 million "subsidy" to Ford when Joe Volpe was HR Minister that would make it 2003/2005- and I dare anyone to prove I'm wrong. Morgan included !!!
Gwynner, now you know why Canada didn't want you as a Appoiontments Commissioner. You are dishonest ...........- Posted 17/03/08 at 7:27 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

And meanwhile....the 'War on Poverty' continues to suck taxpayers dry....Peter meet Paul:

AnEnglishman InOttawa from Ottawa, Canada writes: These schemes's are literally job creation scheme's with no output, may as well have them all turning the Stop-Go sign at every traffic light in the land. Who needs those new fangled traffic light thingeys.

Rob McCleave from Canada writes: All the subsidies and trade protection in the world won't save the North American auto industry from itself.
They don't make product that anybody outside North America wants, or even can use. Giant SUVs and 4x4 pickups don't fit on most of the world's streets.
Nobody who pays $2 a litre for gasoline wants or can afford a 6 litre, 2 valve, push rod V8. Who cares about a hemi? How about technology from the late 20th century?
Chrysler in the 70s and Bear Stearns today prove that if you run your business badly enough, the government will come in and bail you out. And those dollars make the cost of the 211 phone service for social assistance recipients in Ontario look pretty small.- Posted 17/03/08 at 7:57 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

just the facts - Jack... from Canada writes: Yes Vern...me thinks he does too...
But when you quote the Fraser Institute who is quoting The National Post...hmmm
tsk, tsk, Mr. Morgan...A quick google found me this "Federal Human Resources Minister Joe Volpe will announce a $100million commitment to Ford Motor Co....part of previously announce five-year $500-million commitment for auto manufacturing in Ontario, some of which is eventually expected to go to General Motors..."
I think Mr. Morgan is taking Einstein too literally when he said. "Imagination is more important than knowledge."
But then, how many subsidies are Mr. Morgans old friends in the oil patch going to get for carbon sequestration? Maybe we need a little Darwin here...- Posted 17/03/08 at 8:39 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

David Simon from Canada writes: What possible use could subsidies to a dying industry do, especially to the fastest dying in a dying industry.
Did Laurier (a Liberal!) give subsidies to the dying horse and buggy industry in Ontario?
But Dion and his Belmonts will if he becomes Prime Minister. and McGuinty is doing so right now.- Posted 17/03/08 at 8:49 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

F. Wm. Woodward from calgary, Canada writes: It is unfortunate the Auto sector is doomed absent a major restructuring starting with Buz Hargrove. Remember the Auto sector main underpinning heretofore have been medicare Govt subsidies.

Mr. Shim Shalla Bim from Canada writes: As much as I disagree with Mr. Morgan on most things, he makes some good points. However, what does a government do when everyone around them is subsidising? As much as many dislike federal subsidies to Bombardier, how do you respond when the Brazillians pump money into EMBRAER and undercut your offerings? Obviously, there's a point when you get into subsidy wars and the costs outweigh the benefits, but sometimes you have to fight fire with fire.

Michel Trahan from Montreal, writes: The north-American auto industry needs a whole lot more then mere government subsidy... it needs a whole shake up!

Sean L. from Toronto, Canada writes: Vern, why don't you tell us all about how those bailouts to Massey Ferguson worked out.
I am still waiting for them to move those plants back here from Ohio.
And what about the last bailouts to GM et.al.
Do we have to pay them "protection" every couple of years?- Posted 17/03/08 at 5:43 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

G. Veneta from Canada writes: Sure Morgan. Don't bail out any industry except for the financial one! The one where the boys are paid obscene salaries.
Your dim article is sadly poorly timed. Just what do any of you fundie Libertarians know about anything. Your type has just brought our entire financial system to it's knees and the trusty taxpayer must bail them out. Welfare for the rich. You people have warped morality.
No one cares what you think by the way.- Posted 18/03/08 at 1:13 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment
