What does stock market say about the real economy?

OTTAWA — It is an article of faith among economists that what happens in the stock market will eventually show up in the real economy. That is why the market index, in Canada's case the S&P/TSX composite index, is considered a leading indicator, an economic road sign pointing to where the economy will go in the near future.
