1. A LONG PEDIGREE It's difficult to pinpoint when humans first started cultivating rice, but one of the first recorded mentions of the grain came out of China in 2800 BC, when Emperor Shen Nung implemented an annual ceremony in which he would sow the first seeds of each year's crop. Historians believe rice made its way to North America some time around 1694 in a British ship.
