To promote the upcoming Summerworks festival in Toronto, playwrights Tara Beagan, Claudia Dey, Linda Griffiths, Rosa Laborde, Anita Majumdar and Hannah Moscovitch have made a YouTube video. In which they wear slips. Say "like" a lot. And have a giggly pillow fight.
If only this was how the Siminovitch prize was determined.
Says Moscovitch in the video: "You know, Claudia, I just want to say, like, from all of us, kind of? That you really showed us, like, been a model, of like how to be a really beautiful, hot playwright?"
"It's true!" agree all the others.
Well, watch it yourself.
One assumes this is a bit of a wind-up about how much attention has been paid to playwright and Globe and Mail advice columnist Claudia Dey's looks - and the fact that she was once sex columnist for Toro magazine (under the pseudonym Bebe O'Shea).
The Summerworks video is not playing terribly well with some in the theatre community, however, NOT hears. (That's Nestruck on Theatre, see.)
Producer Naomi Campbell of DVxT has left a comment on the Summerworks blog expressing her disapproval:
"I am embarrassed too. For [Summerworks producer Michael Rubenfeld], for me, for my colleagues in the video. There are many, many provocative and interesting ways of inciting dialogue, without humiliating anyone. Stooping to such juvenile antics is lazy, and I am not sure why this intelligent and sophisticated group of women agreed to engage in it. This is not the kind of discussion we should be spending our energies on."
Well, what do you think? The video's caught my attention, so I guess it's working as promotion...
UPDATE: Here's the director's cut.

"Interpretation", the second video, is posted. It'll be interesting to see what kind of a response it gets too.
