Local food - better for the conscience, but not the wallet

The bourgeois back-to-earth movement is nothing if not rich in irony. Last month, while my husband and I were planning a naming ceremony for our newborn, the officiating rabbi sent me a list of responsibilities we were to commit to in raising our son. Among them was to "build a green world." Reproducing for a second time hardly seemed to fit the bill, but then again, the rabbi lived in a 5,000-square-foot house complete with pool and three-car garage.
