Sekeres: It's Back to School

Throughout the Games, Dawn Walton and I have had a running joke: the Olympics are summer camp.

Every day, members of Team Globe wake up in a single bed and fight a roomie for the shower and the loo. Then we traipse down to a cafeteria-style breakfast. We usually have a cafeteria-style lunch, and a cafeteria-style dinner. We often dine together, at the same table, like it's high school. Most of us are in shorts and shoes with a good sole. Sometimes we are wearing our Globe shirts (i.e. in full uniform or No. 1 dress).

After we eat breakfast, we go our separate ways and do different activities. Some of us are working at the Main Press Centre, sitting at the same desks, like it's high school. We reconvene at night, and talk about our adventures that day. Frequently, we have seen or experienced something that we have never seen or experienced before, so that demands a full story. The others listen intently, like it's a scary ghost story around a campfire.

At night, on the rare occasions we aren't working, we sneak off and do something fun, escaping to the mysteries beyond camp borders. We are allowed visitors, but they must register with camp management (i.e. the Chinese government), and they must leave by 11 p.m. – because nothing good ever happens after 11 p.m.

There is no end of summer dance, but the sentiment today, with camp ending, is that autumn has arrived. Reality has returned. Time to sharpen pencils and label binders.

It's Back to School.
