The Soviet Union took part in the Olympic Games, which it previously condemned as inherently aristocratic and capitalistic, for the first time in 1952. In these Games, held in Helsinki, the Soviet Union won 71 medals, 22 of them gold. The United States won 76 medals, 40 of them gold. Coming from nowhere, the Soviet achievement stunned the world. Sports Illustrated proclaimed “the end of United States domination of the Olympic Games.
