Financial Facelift: Helped by parents, but disability erodes income
In Toronto, a woman we'll call Sally, 55, lives in a $500,000 house, has a rental property, yet has almost no earned income. Her standard of living is being maintained by a lump-sum insurance settlement for a claim based on a long-term illness that impaired her ability to work and by subsidies from her affluent parents.
Until a few years ago, Sally had gross income of as much as $100,000 a year.
